We would recommend finding a good groomer and have the dog taken in every 2 weeks for a trim. Very few dogs need to be put under anesthesia just to have their nails trimmed. They should consider taking the dog to the vet to be evaluated and have the first nail trim done by the vet. Take a look at this info “When to trim your dog’s nails” at this link

I know a family who owns a greyhound who they love very much. They love her so much they are afraid to trim her nails. The nails got so long the began to lean diagonally on the laminate floors, twisting her toes. When she lays on her stomach and spreads her paws straight out in front of her, her nails still touch the floor. After watching this for a few months, I brought over clippers and trimmed them a little bit. Most of the nails are still are pushing against the floor and one of them bled because I clipped the quick. I suggested they trim a little bit every 5 days until the quick recedes, They want to take her to the vet and have her put under to get her nails trimmed and I guess the quick will be cauterized while she is under. What would you recommend?
